Exploring Plakovo Monastery
Plakovo Monastery, officially known as “The Holy Prophet Elijah,” is a significant cultural landmark in Bulgaria. Located approximately 20 km from Veliko Tarnovo, this monastery offers a glimpse into Bulgaria’s rich history and architectural prowess. The site is about 2 km from the Kapinovo Monastery, earning them the nickname “twin monasteries.”
A Journey Through History
The monastery was originally founded during the reign of Tsar Ivan Asen II in the 13th century. It has endured destruction and reconstruction over the centuries, notably being razed during the Ottoman invasion in 1393 and rebuilt in 1450. The current church, believed to be the work of master builder Kolyo Ficheto, was constructed in 1845. Ficheto also added a second wing and a 25.9-meter-high bell tower in 1856. Inside, you’ll find the work of renowned 19th-century icon painter Zahariy Zograf, including the fresco “The Blessed Elijah on His Chariot.”
Getting There
To visit Plakovo Monastery, head towards the village of Velchevo from Veliko Tarnovo. The monastery is located 5 km past Velchevo. While there are no direct public transportation options from Sofia, you can take a bus to Veliko Tarnovo and then drive or hire a taxi for the remaining distance. Note that the roads can be narrow and winding, so plan accordingly.

The monastery is open year-round, with each season offering its own charm. Spring and autumn provide mild weather and vibrant scenery, while summer offers longer days for exploration. Winter can be enchanting with snow, but be prepared for colder temperatures. The annual celebration in honor of the monastery church is held on July 20, which can be a lively time to visit.

There is no admission fee to visit Plakovo Monastery. The grounds are compact, making it easy to explore on foot. Inside, the serene atmosphere and historical artifacts invite reflection. Although there are no overnight accommodations, the resident monk is available to share insights about the monastery’s history and the surrounding region, though only in Bulgarian.
