Getting There
Lake Chivero Recreational Park is conveniently located about 40 kilometers southwest of Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital. The most straightforward route is via the Harare-Bulawayo road. If you’re flying in, Harare International Airport is your gateway, with various options for car rentals or taxis to reach the park. Public transportation, including buses and minibusses, also connects Harare to the park.
Best Time to Visit
The ideal time to visit Lake Chivero is between May and October. During these months, the weather is mild, and wildlife is more visible. The rainy season runs from November to April, which can make some activities less accessible due to heavy rainfall.
Exploring the Park
Wildlife Safari
Lake Chivero is home to a diverse range of wildlife. Expect to see southern white rhinos, Angolan giraffes, and Burchell’s zebras, among others. The park’s game viewing area, established in 1962, spans 1,867 hectares and features animals introduced from Hwange National Park and Lake Kariba.
Bird Watching
Bird enthusiasts will find Lake Chivero a paradise, with over 400 bird species. Look out for South African ostriches, African openbills, and fish eagles. Bring binoculars to fully appreciate the vibrant birdlife.
Fishing and Boating
Fishing is a popular activity year-round, with tilapia and catfish among the catches. The park offers five fishing and picnic sites. Recreational boating is also available, with several private companies offering boat rentals.
Hiking and Horse Riding
For those who enjoy hiking, guided game walks can be arranged, lasting from one to five hours. Horse riding is available daily except Mondays, with two sessions each day. These activities require advance booking and are subject to weather conditions.
Accommodation and Facilities
Lake Chivero offers a range of accommodations, from self-catering lodges and chalets to camping sites. The South Bank features lodges like Sunbird and Stonechat, while the North Bank hosts the Msasa caravan and camping site. Facilities include braai stands, ablution blocks, and firewood supply.

While at Lake Chivero, try traditional Zimbabwean dishes such as sadza and nyama choma. The park’s eateries serve these local specialties, along with Zimbabwean tea infused with local herbs.
