Discovering Ntumbachushi Falls in Zambia

Getting There

To visit Ntumbachushi Falls, start by flying into Lusaka, Zambia’s capital. From there, you can either take a domestic flight to Kasama or opt for a road trip directly from Lusaka. If you choose the latter, prepare for a scenic drive through Zambia’s countryside. From Kasama, the falls are about a four-hour drive away, located 22 km from Mbereshi on the tarred Kawambwa road. A 1 km spur off the main road will lead you to the base of the falls.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to experience Ntumbachushi Falls is during the rainy season, from November to April, when the water flow is at its peak. However, if you prefer a quieter visit, consider the dry season from May to September, when the falls create a delicate ‘bridalveil’ effect. Each season offers a unique perspective of this natural wonder.

Exploring the Falls

Ntumbachushi Falls is not just one waterfall but a series of cascades stretching over 2 km. The main falls split into two channels, each about 10 meters wide and dropping 30 meters. A small patch of rainforest thrives in the mist, adding to the area’s allure. For those interested in hiking, a steep path on the north side of the main falls leads to ‘the beauty spot,’ featuring two pools below a 6-meter-high waterfall.

Hiking Trails

  • Main Trail: This trail takes you to the base of the main falls, offering close-up views and the chance to feel the power of the cascading water. It’s accessible for all fitness levels.
  • Hidden Path: For a more challenging hike, explore the hidden path. This route provides unique perspectives and secluded spots, including hidden caves and swimming areas.

Local Transportation

Within the falls area, hiking is the best way to explore. If you wish to venture beyond, renting a car in Kasama is advisable. This gives you the flexibility to explore the surrounding regions at your own pace.

Accommodation

While there are no accommodations directly at Ntumbachushi Falls, nearby Kasama offers a range of options. From budget-friendly guesthouses to more luxurious lodges, there’s something to suit various preferences and budgets. Booking in advance is recommended, especially during peak tourist seasons.

Additional Insights

Ntumbachushi Falls is not only a natural spectacle but also a cultural site. Nearby, two shrines serve as places for local traditional rituals. The clear waters of the Ngona River, filtered by surrounding wetlands, make for safe swimming, considered by many as some of the best in Zambia.
