Location and History
Cerro Arequita is a prominent hill located in the Lavalleja department of Uruguay, approximately 12 kilometers north of the city of Minas. Rising to a height of 305 meters, this rocky massif is part of the Arequita formation from the Early Cretaceous period, dating back around 120 million years. The hill is now part of the Arequita National Park, established in 2024 to preserve its unique natural features.
The name “Arequita” comes from the Guaraní word “araicuahita,” meaning “water from the high stones of the caves,” referring to the mysterious water that drips inside the Colón Cave, one of the three caves in the hill. The indigenous Charrúa people held this area in high regard, adding a layer of cultural significance to its geological importance.
