Al Hayl Fort, located in the Wadi Hayl to the west of Fujairah, offers a unique glimpse into the past of the United Arab Emirates. Built in 1932 by Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamdan Al Sharqi, this fort served as his principal residence for two decades. Constructed as a fortified courtyard house, Al Hayl Fort includes a watchtower originally built for Sheikh Abdullah’s younger brother, Suhail. The fort’s architecture reflects the traditional building techniques of the time, using gabbro and dolerite rocks bound with mud mortar, and faced with plaster. The interiors feature gypsum plaster, and the woodwork is crafted from mangrove and hardwood planking.
The area around Al Hayl has been settled since the Umm Al Nar period, with archaeological finds such as tombs and petroglyphs. The village was traditionally inhabited by the Kunud tribe and was abandoned in the late 1970s when residents moved to a new village further down the wadi.
