Exploring Vorontsov Lighthouse in Ukraine

About Vorontsov Lighthouse

Vorontsov Lighthouse stands as a prominent beacon on the coast of the Black Sea in Odesa, Ukraine. This lighthouse is not just a navigational aid but a piece of the region’s maritime history, attracting visitors with its striking presence and historical significance.

History and Significance

The current Vorontsov Lighthouse is the third iteration on this site, with the first being constructed in 1862 from wood. Named after Prince Mikhail Semenovich Vorontsov, the lighthouse has played a crucial role in guiding ships safely through the treacherous waters of the Black Sea. Its historical importance is underscored by its enduring presence and the technological advancements it has seen over the years.

Today, the lighthouse is a symbol of Odesa’s rich maritime heritage, featuring a one-million-watt signal light visible up to twelve nautical miles away. It also transmits the Morse Code signal for “O” and sounds a foghorn during adverse weather conditions.
