The Stubbs family, originally salt producers from Cheshire, England, named the plantation after their home county. The plantation grew sisal and sea island cotton, utilizing locally cut limestone for its buildings.
At its peak, Cheshire Hall spanned approximately 5,000 acres and was worked by hundreds of enslaved Africans. However, challenges such as low water availability and pest infestations eventually led Thomas Stubbs to sell the land to his brother in 1810. Over time, the site fell into disrepair, suffering from theft and vandalism.
