Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park spans the Phitsanulok and Loei provinces in Thailand, covering an area of approximately 307 square kilometers. This park is a fascinating blend of natural beauty and historical significance. It features diverse landscapes, including mixed deciduous, dry dipterocarp, hill evergreen, and conifer forests. The park is part of the Phetchabun Mountains, with peaks like Phu Man Khao reaching 1,820 meters and Phu Lomlo at 1,664 meters. Streams such as Huai Lam Nam Sai and Huai Luang Yai add to its scenic charm.

Historical Significance

From 1968 to 1972, Phu Hin Rong Kla was a battleground between Thai communist insurgents and the Royal Thai Armed Forces. The challenging terrain initially favored the insurgents, but the military eventually gained the support of the local Hmong community, leading to a peaceful resolution. The park was officially declared Thailand’s 48th national park on July 26, 1984, and is now managed by the Protected Areas Regional Office 11 in Phitsanulok.

Best Time to Visit

The park’s climate is generally cool year-round, with temperatures rarely exceeding 77°F (25°C). The best time to visit is during the cool and dry season from November to February. During this period, the weather is ideal for outdoor activities like hiking and wildlife observation. However, be prepared for potential crowds on weekends and public holidays.

Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park is located about 400 kilometers north of Bangkok. Here are some options for reaching the park:

The closest airport is Phitsanulok Airport, which offers regular flights from Bangkok. From the airport, the park is about a two-hour drive by taxi or rental car.

By Train

Trains from Bangkok to Phitsanulok take approximately 6-7 hours. From Phitsanulok, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to the park.

By Bus

Buses from Bangkok to Phitsanulok are a budget-friendly option, with the journey taking around 5-6 hours. Once in Phitsanulok, you can continue to the park by taxi or bus.
