JINGUALIAO FISH AND FERN TRAIL

Discovering the Jingualiao Fish and Fern Trail

For over a year, the Jingualiao Fish and Fern Trail lingered in my “want to go” list on Google Maps. The trail’s name and its waterside location intrigued me, but the journey seemed daunting. While it’s just over an hour by car, public transport from my home takes about three hours. However, a serendipitous mistake led me to this trail. I intended to head to Qingyun Bridge via the F723 route but mistakenly took the wrong branch. Realizing my error, I decided to seize the opportunity to explore the trail instead.

A Journey Through Nature

Years ago, my mother discovered a free bus from the Pinglin Tea Museum to Jingualiao. The river has been a sanctuary for fish, complemented by lush fern and bamboo forests. The shimmering waters and leisurely swimming fish create a captivating scene.

On sunny holidays, clouds often gather in the mountains by noon. Starting early on a motorcycle allows you to see “Shiding Crocodile Island” before the clouds roll in and still have time to reach Jingualiao, where the sky remains beautifully blue.

In the afternoon, we enjoyed a homemade meal at Jiu Xiong Gen Water Park, then walked back along the stream, which features five entrances. The “Fern Apartment” section is particularly lush, offering a chance to notice details often missed in haste. The trail transitions into bamboo forest paths, inviting you to enjoy the stream up close. It’s remarkable to find such an ecologically rich trail so close to Taipei.

Trail Highlights

Between the first and second entrances lies a canyon waterfall. The terrain is elevated, with simple rope rails to prevent slips. Near the first entrance, a damaged stair section requires a brief detour. Fortunately, the entrances are close, with only about 200 steps between them via the asphalt road.

On my ride back, I noticed another section of the “Fish Fern Trail” with many parked vehicles, suggesting abundant fish in that area. Time was short, but I hope to return and explore further.

After returning home, I discovered that the Jingualiao Trail spans about 2.2 kilometers. It’s perfect for a leisurely stroll, allowing you to savor the scenery. In our fast-paced world, it’s a shame to rush through such beauty.

Getting There

Pinglin offers five free bus lines, two of which reach Jingualiao, providing convenient access. For those traveling from afar, the journey to Jingualiao River involves flying into Taipei Taoyuan International Airport, then taking a domestic flight to Hualien Airport, followed by a taxi or car rental for the 1.5-hour drive to the river.

Once there, renting a bicycle is a popular way to explore, with local buses and taxis available for nearby attractions and trails. Check transportation schedules to plan your visit effectively.
