Barzan Towers

Barzan Towers: A Historical Landmark in Qatar

About Barzan Towers

Barzan Towers, also known as the Umm Salal Mohammed Fort Towers, offer a fascinating glimpse into Qatar’s past. Located in the town of Umm Salal Mohammed, these towers stand as a testament to the region’s architectural and cultural heritage. They are situated on Jebel Lusail, a low hill approximately 15 kilometers north of Doha, Qatar’s capital.

History and Significance

Constructed in the late 19th century, the Barzan Towers were later renovated by Sheikh Mohammed bin Jassim Al Thani in the early 20th century. Originally built as watchtowers, they were strategically positioned to monitor potential threats, including the Ottomans. The towers also played a role in observing the new moon during Ramadan, a crucial task for the local community. Restored in 2003, the towers continue to stand as a symbol of Qatar’s resilience and history.

Unique Features

The Barzan Towers are notable for their robust construction and unique architectural features. The walls, one meter thick at the base, are reinforced with buttresses and constructed using coral stones and limestone. The towers’ roofs are built with four layers, including danchal wood poles and woven bamboo strips, designed to withstand the harsh summer sun. Visitors can explore the towers’ interiors, which include a majilis for receiving guests and a mosque that once served as a madrassa.

From the towers, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes, including modern houses on one side and makeshift shacks on the other. An oasis with green trees and palm trees lies behind the towers, adding to the site’s charm.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit Barzan Towers is during the cooler months from November to March. During this period, the weather is more comfortable for outdoor exploration. The summer months can be extremely hot, making it less enjoyable to visit.
