Reserva Paisajística Nor Yauyos-Cochas

Exploring the Nor Yauyos-Cochas Landscape Reserve

Located in the Lima and Junín regions of Peru, the Nor Yauyos-Cochas Landscape Reserve is a protected area that offers a stunning array of natural wonders. This reserve is part of the Peruvian Yungas and Central Andean wet puna ecoregions, providing a diverse habitat for a variety of flora and fauna. It’s a place where towering canyons, cascading waterfalls, and serene lakes come together to create a breathtaking landscape.

Journey to the Reserve

My adventure began with a drive from Huancayo to the village of Huancaya, nestled within the reserve. The journey took about four hours, with plenty of stops for photos along the way. The road is mostly paved, making the drive relatively smooth, except for the final stretch to Huancaya and Vilca. We crossed two high mountain passes, reaching altitudes of 4,600 and 4,700 meters, offering spectacular views of lakes, llama herds, and the dramatic Uchco Canyon.

Highlights of Huancaya and Vilca

Spending two nights in Huancaya, I was captivated by the village’s charm and the surrounding natural beauty. However, the accommodation options were limited, and the mattresses left much to be desired, which was a downside for someone with a sensitive back like mine. Despite this, the experience was unforgettable.

Visiting on a weekday meant the area was peaceful and almost deserted, a stark contrast to the bustling weekends and national holidays when Peruvian tourists flock to the reserve. Interestingly, there was no entrance fee for the reserve itself, but a small charge of S/10 soles was required at both Huancaya and Vilca, although the control points were closed during my visit due to the lack of tourists.

Getting Around and Activities

Exploring the reserve is best done on foot, with several hiking trails offering close encounters with its natural beauty. A boat ride on Lake Huallhua is a must-do, providing a serene experience amidst the turquoise waters. The hike back to Huancaya from the opposite shore of the jetty is equally rewarding, showcasing the area’s diverse landscapes.

The drive from Huancaya to Vilca is another highlight, where the vastness of the landscape unfolds in all its glory. In Vilca, you’ll find a series of cascades and excellent viewpoints that offer panoramic vistas of the surrounding area.

Travel Tips

To reach Lima from Huancaya, you can take a car or combi to Magdalena, a journey of about 1.5 hours through a narrow canyon with stunning scenery. From there, another combi takes you to Cañete, a 2.5-hour drive along the beautiful Cañete River. Direct buses from Lima to Magdalena are sometimes available, and from Cañete, it’s a two-hour drive to Lima with several bus options.

Why Visit Nor Yauyos-Cochas?

The Nor Yauyos-Cochas Landscape Reserve may not be widely known among international tourists, but its unique and magnificent scenery rivals that of Peru’s more famous sites. From endless cascades and deep turquoise lakes to vast canyons and quaint villages, the reserve offers a diverse and awe-inspiring experience.
