DAY 1 Arrival in Lima

LIMA

Welcome to Peru! On arrival at Lima airport you are met and transferred privately to your hotel. The rest of the day is free to settle in and rest after your journey.

DAY 2 Lima — Food & City

LIMA

A full day devoted to Lima's celebrated cuisine and history. You are taken to an exclusive restaurant overlooking the Pacific for a hands-on demonstration of Peru's signature Pisco Sour and its world-famous ceviche, followed by a typical Peruvian lunch with sweeping ocean views.

In the afternoon a city tour takes in the Parque del Amor in Miraflores, a panoramic stop at the Huaca Pucllana ruins, and the colonial centre — the Plaza Mayor, the Government and Archbishop's Palaces, the Cathedral, and the 16th-century Convent of Santo Domingo with its remarkable historic library and religious art.

DAY 3 Ballestas Islands & Ica Dunes

PARACAS · ICA

Leaving Lima, you head south to Paracas and board a speedboat to the Ballestas Islands, passing the mysterious Candelabro geoglyph etched into the cliffs. Around the islands you'll see sea lions, Humboldt penguins and clouds of seabirds among dramatic rock formations. Continuing to Ica, you enjoy a Peruvian wine and pisco tasting before an exhilarating dune-buggy ride and sandboarding on the dunes of the Huacachina oasis, then return to Paracas for the night.

DAY 4 Nazca Overflight → Arequipa

NAZCA → AREQUIPA

You transfer to the airfield for a light-aircraft overflight of the mysterious Nazca Lines, marvelling at the giant geoglyphs from the air as the pilot points out each figure. Afterwards you begin the scenic overland journey (about 10 hours) to the white city of Arequipa, arriving in the evening to rest.

DAY 5 Arequipa City & Santa Catalina

AREQUIPA

An afternoon tour of elegant Arequipa: the colonial San Lázaro quarter, the Plaza de Armas and its cathedral, the churches of La Compañía and San Francisco, and the extraordinary Santa Catalina Monastery — a walled city within a city. You also visit the Yanahuara district with its famous viewpoint and the green landscapes of Carmen Alto and Selva Alegre.

DAY 6 Arequipa → Colca Valley

COLCA · CHIVAY

An early departure for the spectacular Colca Valley, crossing the high puna past the Aguada Blanca reserve — home to wild vicuñas — and the Patapampa pass with its viewpoint over the volcanoes. Arriving in Chivay, you have time to explore the town and its market before overnighting in the valley.

DAY 7 Colca Canyon → Puno

COLCA → PUNO

At dawn you head to the Cruz del Cóndor, perched above one of the world's deepest canyons, to watch giant Andean condors ride the morning thermals. You pass the colonial villages of Maca and Yanque and the Antahuilque viewpoint, lunch in Chivay, then travel on by road to Puno on the shores of Lake Titicaca.

DAY 8 Lake Titicaca — Uros & Taquile

PUNO

A full day on Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. You visit the Uros people on their remarkable floating islands built entirely of totora reeds, then continue to Taquile Island, climbing to its heights for sweeping lake views and meeting a community renowned for its textiles and traditional way of life, with a typical lunch prepared by islanders.

DAY 9 Puno → Cusco (Scenic Route)

PUNO → CUSCO

A scenic overland journey to Cusco through ever-changing Andean landscapes. You stop at the Pukará archaeological site and museum, cross the high pass of La Raya (4,335 m) beneath snow-capped peaks, lunch en route, and visit the temple of Raqchi and the beautifully painted chapel of Andahuaylillas — the 'Sistine Chapel of the Andes' — before arriving in Cusco.

DAY 10 Cusco City & Ruins

CUSCO

A guided tour of Cusco and the ruins that ring it: the Cathedral on the Plaza de Armas, the Qoricancha Temple of the Sun, and the great stone fortress of Sacsayhuamán — one of the Incas' most astonishing feats of engineering. You continue to Q'enqo with its carved passageways, the Puca Pucara lookout, and the water shrine of Tambomachay before returning to the city.

DAY 11 Cusco → Sacred Valley

SACRED VALLEY

You set off early into the Sacred Valley of the Incas, stopping first at the colourful Pisac market, famed for its craftsmanship. After lunch in Urubamba you explore the terraced fortress of Ollantaytambo, then settle into your hotel in the valley for the night.

DAY 12 Machu Picchu

MACHU PICCHU → CUSCO

The highlight of any Peru journey. You transfer to the station for the scenic train to Aguas Calientes, then ride up to the citadel of Machu Picchu — one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and a former royal retreat of the Inca Pachacutec. After a guided visit and lunch, you return by train and transfer back to Cusco.

DAY 13 Cusco at Leisure

A free day to enjoy Cusco at your own pace — wander its cobbled streets and markets, relax in a café on the Plaza de Armas, or delve deeper into its history and culture.

DAY 14 Into the Amazon

PUERTO MALDONADO

You fly from Cusco down to Puerto Maldonado on the edge of the Amazon, where you are met and taken by motorised canoe about 1½ hours down the Madre de Dios River to your jungle lodge. After a lunch of organic, local flavours, a guided walk through primary and secondary rainforest introduces the forest's ecology, finishing after dark to spot nocturnal wildlife, before a traditional dinner back at the lodge.

DAY 15 Lake Sandoval

TAMBOPATA

A hike into the Tambopata National Reserve brings you to Lake Sandoval, deep in the region known as Peru's biodiversity capital. You canoe across the lake — home to endangered giant otters, blue-and-yellow macaws and the giant paiche fish — and enjoy a picnic lunch featuring juane, a local dish of rice and chicken steamed in bijao leaves. After dark, a night hike reveals a completely different cast of creatures.

DAY 16 Tambopata Expedition

TAMBOPATA

An early start for a combined boat-and-vehicle journey to the Chunchos clay lick, in a wildlife-rich corner of the upper Tambopata reserve. After lunch you climb an observation tower for sweeping views across the jungle canopy and the chance to spot more of its birds and animals, with optional guided walks to learn about the area's conservation work.

DAY 17 Collpa Chunchos → Lima

PUERTO MALDONADO → LIMA

A pre-dawn start to reach the Collpa Chunchos clay lick, where parrots and macaws gather at first light in a riot of colour and sound — a memorable way to close your time in the Amazon. You then return to the lodge to check out, transfer back to Puerto Maldonado and fly to Lima, where you are met and taken to your hotel.

DAY 18 Departure

LIMA

Your Peru adventure comes to a close. At the appropriate time you are collected from your hotel and transferred to Lima airport for your onward flight home.

  • If the event is cancelled by Urbanature Travel (UNT), you will get a full refund (excluding any airfares), unless you have purchased a flight inclusive package directly with Urbanature Travel (UNT) in which case you will get a refund including the flights.
  • Please note that the program, as well as the venue is subject to change due to extreme weather conditions, as well as to the characteristics and size of the group.
