Mount Korab

Korab: A Journey to the Roof of the Balkans

Overview

Korab, known as Maja e Korabit in Albanian and Golem Korab in Macedonian, is the highest peak of the Korab mountain range. Standing at 2,764 meters (9,068 feet), it is the tallest mountain in both Albania and North Macedonia. This unique peak is one of only two in Europe that serves as the highest point for more than one country. Its prominence ranks it as the 18th most prominent peak in Europe and the third on the Balkan Peninsula.

Location and Access

Korab straddles the border between Albania and North Macedonia. The Albanian side is part of the Korab-Koritnik Nature Park, known for its rich biodiversity, including species such as Bosnian pine, European beech, and alder. The peak is adjacent to the Šar Mountains and features on the national emblem of North Macedonia.

Getting There

The closest major airport is Skopje International Airport in North Macedonia. From there, you can rent a car or take a taxi to reach the starting points of the hiking trails. The road to the trailhead is not paved and can be challenging, so a vehicle with high clearance or a 4×4 is recommended.

Hiking Routes

There are two main routes to the summit of Golem Korab. The North Macedonian route begins at Strezimir, while the Albanian route starts from the village of Radomirë. Both trails offer stunning views and are similarly demanding, though the North Macedonian route is slightly shorter with less elevation gain.

Route from Strezimir

The hike from Strezimir is approximately 24 km round trip, with an ascent of 1,550 meters. The trail begins with a forested section, but shade is scarce after that. The hike is demanding due to its length and elevation gain, taking about 11 hours to complete, including breaks. The trail is marked with international red/white markings, and the path is generally clear.

Practical Tips

  • Best Time to Visit: May to October, when the weather is most favorable.
  • Essential Gear: Standard hiking gear, including sturdy boots and plenty of water, as the last water source is at the start of the hike.
  • Registration: Previously, hikers needed permission from the border police, but this is no longer required. However, carrying your passport is advisable, as checks may occur.
  • Camping: Allowed along the route.

Experience and Highlights

The ascent to Golem Korab offers breathtaking views, especially as you approach the summit. The trail passes through diverse landscapes, including a sheep farm about 2 km from the border police station. Hikers should be cautious of shepherd dogs and try to make contact with the shepherds, who are typically Albanian-speaking.

In mid-August, you might still find patches of ice near the summit, but the climb is generally warm and sunny. The peak provides panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, making the challenging hike worthwhile.

Accommodation and Amenities

For those planning to stay overnight, the nearest accommodation is Hotel Korab Trnica. It’s advisable to book in advance, especially during peak hiking season. The hotel provides a convenient base for exploring the area.
