Tinghir: Discover Morocco’s Oasis

Location and Geography

Tinghir, also known as Tinerhir, is a city in southern Morocco with a population of about 42,000 as of the 2014 census. Situated at an elevation of 1,300 meters, it lies in the High Atlas Mountains and is central to one of the most attractive oases in the region. The city is predominantly inhabited by the Amazigh people and is renowned for its proximity to the Todra Gorge, a stunning series of limestone river canyons.

Getting There

To reach Tinghir, you can fly into Marrakech Menara Airport or Ouarzazate Airport. From Ouarzazate, daily buses are available from the gare routière for about 60 MAD. The journey takes approximately 2-3 hours. If you prefer, you can hire a private car for more flexibility. If the bus continues beyond the main station, you can ask the driver to stop in town.

Local Transportation

Once in Tinghir, getting around is straightforward. You can hire a local guide or taxi to explore the area. Alternatively, rent a bicycle for a more leisurely pace. The town is compact, making it easy to navigate on foot. For a unique experience, catch a grand taxi to the Todra Gorge for a day hike.

Best Time to Visit

Visit Tinghir in spring or autumn when temperatures range from 59°F to 77°F (15°C to 25°C). These seasons offer mild weather, ideal for outdoor activities. Summer can be extremely hot, with temperatures exceeding 104°F (40°C), which might limit your exploration.

Things to Do in Tinghir

Explore the Todra Gorge

The Todra Gorge is a highlight of Tinghir. Take a day hike through the gorge, starting with a grand taxi ride to the narrow section. Continue on foot past the hotels, following the trail along the usually dry riverbed. The hike takes 2-3 hours and offers breathtaking views. Look for paired cairns to guide your way.

Visit the Tinghir Palm Grove

Stroll through the lush Tinghir Palm Grove, an oasis of tranquility. Explore the nearby traditional Berber villages and learn about their culture. Don’t miss the old Jewish quarter and the Palmerie, where you can visit the old Mosque Ikalalne, accessible through a well-marked path.

Experience Local Cuisine

Sample traditional Moroccan dishes like tagine and couscous at local eateries. Recommended spots include Restaurant Cafe Central on Avenue Hassan II and Restaurant Cafe Oasis Rose on Bd Mohamed V. For a quick bite, try Snack Food or Marmara Palace, both on Bd Mohamed V.

Take a Desert Excursion

Tinghir is a gateway to the Sahara Desert. Join a guided tour for a camel ride through the dunes. Spend a night in a traditional desert camp under the stars for an unforgettable experience.

Accommodations

Several hostels and hotels are available in and around Tinghir. The Oasis Hotel is a budget-friendly option near the bus drop-off point. It offers a rooftop view of the mountains and friendly staff to help plan your trips. However, be aware that the beds are basic, and the bathrooms may not meet all comfort standards.
