As the second-most voluminous freshwater lake in Asia, it holds nearly 70% of Mongolia’s freshwater reserves and 0.4% of the world’s freshwater. From Mörön, private taxis can take you to Khatgal, the southern village at the lake, with prices ranging from 30,000 to 50,000 tugrik. Alternatively, a long-distance bus from Ulaanbaatar to Khatgal is available, costing 57,000 tugrik and taking approximately 15 hours. Note that flights directly to Khatgal are seasonal and may not always be available.
Best Time to Visit
The ideal time to visit Lake Khövsgöl is during the summer months, from June to August, when the weather is mild and the landscape is vibrant. However, for a unique experience, consider visiting in March for the Ice Festival, where the frozen lake becomes a stage for cultural events and activities.
