About Khustain Nuruu National Park

Khustain Nuruu National Park, also known as Hustai National Park, is a remarkable destination in Mongolia, located about 100 kilometers west of Ulaanbaatar. This park is not just a place of natural beauty; it is a testament to successful conservation efforts. If you’re interested in wildlife and ecology, this park offers a unique opportunity to witness nature’s resilience.

Unique Features of Khustain Nuruu National Park

The park is renowned for its successful reintroduction of the Przewalski’s horse, or Takhi, which was once extinct in the wild. This effort began in 1992 and has transformed the park into a sanctuary for these wild horses. Beyond the Takhi, the park is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including Altai wapiti, Mongolian gazelle, and the elusive Pallas’s cat. Bird enthusiasts will find the park particularly rewarding, with 217 bird species recorded, including the golden eagle and the great bustard.

Khustain Nuruu is also a UNESCO-certified biosphere reserve, highlighting its global ecological significance. The park’s management is handled by the Hustai National Park Trust, which focuses on conservation, research, and ecotourism development.

Best Time to Visit

For the best experience, plan your visit between June and August when the weather is warm, ranging from 59°F to 77°F (15°C to 25°C). The park is lush and vibrant during these months, ideal for wildlife viewing and outdoor activities. If you prefer cooler weather and want to see the park’s autumn colors, consider visiting in September or October. However, be prepared for cooler temperatures and possibly fewer wildlife sightings.
