Anse Couleuvre

Anse Couleuvre – A Unique Beach Experience in Martinique

Location and Geography

Anse Couleuvre is located on the northern tip of Martinique, near the foothills of Montagne Pelée. This beach is renowned for its raw, natural beauty, framed by high cliffs and dense tropical rainforest. The volcanic gray sand and the dramatic landscape make it one of the island’s most striking beaches.

Getting There

To visit Anse Couleuvre, fly into Aimé Césaire International Airport. From there, take the coastal D10 road, which winds through the tropical forest and offers views of volcanic peaks. The road is narrow and often slippery due to humidity, so drive carefully. A small parking area is available near the beach, about 200 meters away. The final approach is on foot, via a path that passes through the ruins of an old plantation.

Local Transportation

Once at Anse Couleuvre, the best way to explore is on foot. The beach is accessible by a short walk, and the surrounding area offers hiking opportunities. For those interested in water activities, snorkeling is popular here, thanks to the clear waters and vibrant marine life. Be cautious of currents and waves, which can be strong depending on the weather.

Unique Experiences

Anse Couleuvre offers a blend of natural beauty and adventure. Here are some activities to consider:

1. Hiking to the Waterfall

A hike through the rainforest leads to a waterfall, offering a refreshing natural pool at its base. The trail is rich with tropical flora and fauna, making it a rewarding experience for nature enthusiasts.

2. Snorkeling Adventures

The waters around Anse Couleuvre are ideal for snorkeling. The cliffs and nearby Îlet La Perle are home to vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life. Keep an eye out for tropical fish and gorgonians. Always be mindful of the sea conditions before entering the water.

3. Exploring Local Culture

While Anse Couleuvre itself is more about nature, nearby villages offer a glimpse into local life. Try traditional dishes like accras and enjoy a ti’ punch. Engaging with locals can provide insights into Martinique’s rich cultural tapestry.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season, from December to April, is the best time to visit Anse Couleuvre for sunny weather and beach activities. However, this is also the peak tourist season. For a quieter experience, consider visiting during the shoulder months of May to June or September to November.
