Kirindy Forest – Madagascar
Location and Geography
Kirindy Forest is located in western Madagascar, within the Kirindy Mitea National Park. It lies approximately 60 km southwest of Morondava and about 21 km east of Belo-sur-Mer. This area is part of the Toliara Province and is recognized as a conservation priority area due to its unique biodiversity. The forest is one of the largest protected dry forests in Madagascar, covering a significant area with diverse ecosystems.
Climate
The climate in Kirindy Forest is tropical and highly seasonal. The dry season runs from March or April to November or December, during which most trees shed their leaves. The wet season, from November or December to March or April, brings most of the annual rainfall, averaging around 800 mm. Temperatures range from 19°C to 40°C, with an annual mean of 25°C. The wet season can make access to the forest challenging due to increased precipitation.
Unique Flora and Fauna
Kirindy Forest is home to an extraordinary array of wildlife, much of which is endemic to Madagascar. The forest hosts over 65 species of reptiles and amphibians, 55 species of birds, and 31 species of mammals. Notable mammals include several species of lemurs, such as the Verreaux’s sifaka and the critically endangered Madame Berthe’s mouse lemur, the world’s smallest primate. Other mammals include the fossa, a top predator, and the endangered Malagasy giant jumping rat.
Reptiles and Amphibians
The forest is rich in reptilian life, with around 50 species, including chameleons like the Furcifer nicosiai and Furcifer oustaleti, the latter being the largest chameleon in the world. Amphibians are also abundant, with species like the Mocquard’s rain frog and the Antsohy tomato frog, which are active during the rainy season.

The ideal time to visit Kirindy Forest is during the dry season, from April to November. This period offers pleasant weather and better opportunities for wildlife observation. However, be prepared for hot daytime temperatures and pack lightweight, breathable clothing.

The nearest major airport is in Morondava, a city on Madagascar’s west coast. From Morondava, you can hire a local guide or join a guided tour to reach Kirindy Forest, which is about a three-hour drive away. The journey offers scenic views of Madagascar’s landscapes.
