Exploring Soumba Falls: A Day Trip from Conakry
During my time in Guinea, I had the opportunity to visit Soumba Falls, a popular destination for both locals and expatriates. Located just under 50 kilometers from Conakry, the falls offer a refreshing escape from the city. The trip was organized by our Community Liaison Office (CLO), which often arranges such outings for embassy staff and their families.
Getting There
We gathered at the U.S. Embassy at 7 AM to board buses for the journey to Soumba Falls. Although the drive should ideally take about an hour, traffic conditions in Conakry can be unpredictable. On this particular Saturday, it took us three hours to reach our destination. The journey, however, was not without its interesting sights, including a cemetery with the thought-provoking sign, “Nous Etions Comme Vous, Vous Serez Comme Nous!” (“We once were like you, you will be like us!”).
Arrival and First Impressions
Upon arrival, we were greeted by the sound of cascading water and the sight of lush greenery. The falls were flowing well, thanks to the recent end of the rainy season. It’s worth noting that visiting during the dry season, from late January to late March, might be less impressive as the water flow diminishes significantly.
Activities at Soumba Falls
Visitors have a couple of options for exploring the area. The CLO had previously organized a hike along the road we had driven in on, but this time, we opted for a different route that promised more scenic views. The falls themselves are a great spot for swimming in the natural pools or climbing the rocks for a closer look at the water. There’s also a restaurant nearby, making it convenient to grab a meal after a morning of exploration.
Practical Tips
If you’re planning a visit, aim to go during the dry season when the falls are at their most impressive. Be prepared for variable travel times due to traffic, and consider hiring a local guide if you’re unfamiliar with the area. While the falls are accessible by car, the roads can be challenging, especially after rain.
Overall, Soumba Falls offers a pleasant day trip from Conakry, providing a chance to enjoy Guinea’s natural beauty. Just be sure to plan your visit during the right season to make the most of the experience.
