Ushguli Village

Ushguli Village: A Unique Destination in Georgia

The Charm of Ushguli

Ushguli, located in the Caucasus Mountains of Georgia, is a cluster of villages known for their ancient stone towers, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Upper Svaneti. These towers, or koshki, stand as a testament to the region’s rich history. Walking through Ushguli, you’ll encounter a way of life that has remained largely unchanged for centuries, offering a glimpse into the traditions of the Svan people.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to explore Ushguli is during the summer months from June to September. The weather is pleasant, and the landscape is vibrant with wildflowers. If you prefer a winter visit, be prepared for snow-covered vistas that turn the area into a serene, albeit challenging, winter wonderland. While winter sports are possible, the remote location and limited facilities mean it’s best suited for those seeking solitude and adventure.

Getting to Ushguli

Reaching Ushguli requires some planning. The nearest major airport is in Kutaisi. From there, you can hire a private vehicle to take you to Mestia, the closest town with road access to Ushguli. The journey from Mestia to Ushguli takes about 1.5 hours under good weather conditions. Private vehicles or shared taxis are available, with costs around 200 lari for a day trip or 50 lari per person if sharing. Note that transportation is limited, especially in winter, so plan accordingly.

Local Transportation

Once in Ushguli, exploring on foot is the best option. The village’s compact size and cobblestone streets make walking the most practical way to see the sights. Comfortable shoes are a must. For those looking to venture further, renting a horse from a local villager offers a unique way to experience the surrounding mountainous terrain.

Ushguli offers a rare opportunity to step back in time and experience a culture that has endured for centuries. While the journey may be challenging, the reward is a deeper understanding of Georgia’s history and natural beauty.
