Kuusamo

Welcome to Kuusamo, Finland

Kuusamo, located in the Koillismaa highlands of Finland, is a destination that offers a rich tapestry of natural beauty, outdoor activities, and cultural history. Known for its steep forested hills and pristine lakes, Kuusamo is a place where rivers flow both to the Arctic Ocean and the Baltic Sea. Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast or a history buff, Kuusamo provides a unique experience.

Explore the Wilderness

Kuusamo is famous for its untouched landscapes, including the renowned Oulanka National Park. This park is home to the Myllykoski rapids of the Kitkajoki River, part of Finland’s national landscapes. The park’s lush forests and sparkling rivers offer a serene escape into nature.

While in Oulanka, don’t miss the Riisitunturi area, known for its stunning views. Although often referred to as a fell, it doesn’t reach the tree line, but it still offers breathtaking panoramas. Winter is particularly magical here, with snow-covered trees creating a picturesque scene.

Top Tip: Visit during winter for a true winter wonderland experience, but be prepared for cold temperatures that can drop to −15 °C (5 °F).

For bird watchers, Valtavaara Hill is a must-visit. This area is rich in birdlife, including species like the Siberian Jay and the White-tailed Eagle. Bring your binoculars for a chance to see these magnificent birds in their natural habitat.

Adventure Activities

Kuusamo offers a variety of activities for thrill-seekers. Ruka Ski Resort, although not a true fell, provides excellent skiing opportunities with its extensive trails. The area receives significant snowfall, making it a prime location for winter sports.

If skiing isn’t your preference, try snowboarding or snowmobiling. The snowy landscapes provide a perfect backdrop for these exhilarating activities.

Top Tip: For a unique challenge, try ice climbing in Korouoma Canyon. It’s an activity that tests your limits and rewards you with stunning frozen scenery.

In the summer, Kuusamo transforms into a haven for hikers and mountain bikers. The Ruka-Kuusamo area offers rugged trails that lead to tranquil lakes and ancient forests, perfect for exploration.

Experience Local Culture

Kuusamo’s cultural heritage is as rich as its natural beauty. The area has been inhabited for over 4,000 years, with Finnish settlers arriving in the 1670s. Although the indigenous Sami people have since left, their influence remains in the region’s history.

Visit the local museums to learn about this history and the impact of events like the scorched-earth policy during World War II. While exploring, you’ll notice the scarcity of old buildings, a result of the area’s tumultuous past.

Don’t miss the opportunity to try local delicacies such as reindeer stew and cloudberries, which offer a taste of the region’s culinary traditions.

Top Tip: Plan your visit around the Kuusamo Ruka Festival in July to enjoy traditional music, dance, and folklore performances.

Getting to Kuusamo

Reaching Kuusamo is straightforward. The most practical option is flying into Kuusamo Airport, with daily flights from Helsinki. Charter flights are also available during peak seasons.

For those preferring train travel, the nearest stations are in Kemijärvi and Rovaniemi, with Oulu offering convenient bus connections to Kuusamo.

Local Transportation

Once in Kuusamo, having a car is the most practical way to explore. Public transportation is limited, with only a few intercity and school buses available. Taxis are an option but can be costly due to the distances involved.

Driving allows you to explore at your own pace, but be prepared for winter driving conditions if visiting during the colder months.

Kuusamo offers a blend of natural beauty, adventure, and cultural depth. Whether you’re exploring its landscapes or delving into its history, this Finnish region promises a memorable experience.
