Constanza, located in the central Dominican Republic, offers a refreshing escape from the typical tropical climate. At an elevation of 1,200 meters (4,000 feet), it is the highest town in the Caribbean, known for its cool temperatures and stunning landscapes. This region is a haven for nature enthusiasts, with its rolling valleys, pine forests, and agricultural fields. Often referred to as “the Switzerland of the Caribbean,” Constanza is a place where you can experience a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural richness.

Why Visit Constanza?

Constanza stands out with its cool climate, a stark contrast to the rest of the Dominican Republic. Temperatures range from 5°C to 25°C (41°F to 77°F) throughout the year, with chilly nights from December to March. This makes it ideal for outdoor activities like hiking and birdwatching. The town is surrounded by four national parks, including Valle Nuevo National Park, which offers trails through cloud forests and highland plains. Here, you can spot over 70 bird species, including the endangered golden swallow.

Getting to Constanza

Reaching Constanza is straightforward. From Santo Domingo or Santiago, you can drive via the Duarte Highway, following signs to Constanza. The journey takes about three hours, offering scenic views along the way. Alternatively, buses are available from both cities. Once in Constanza, renting a car is advisable for exploring the area, as public transportation is limited.

While Constanza is small enough to explore on foot, renting a car or hiring a taxi provides flexibility to visit surrounding attractions. The town’s layout is simple, but having your own transportation allows for spontaneous detours to nearby villages and natural sites.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season, from November to April, is the best time to visit Constanza. The weather is pleasant, perfect for outdoor adventures. If you enjoy cultural events, plan your trip around February to experience the Carnaval de Constanza, a lively local celebration. Be prepared for cooler nights, especially from December to March.
