Getting to Kratie

Kratie, located in northeastern Cambodia, is accessible by road from several major cities. From Phnom Penh, you can take a bus or a share-taxi. Buses, operated by companies like Phnom Penh Sorya and G.S.T., take about 6 hours and cost around $8. Share-taxis are faster, taking about 4-5 hours, and cost approximately 20,000 riel per seat. If you’re coming from Stung Treng, expect a 3-hour bus ride. Note that roads from Stung Treng are in disrepair, making the journey less comfortable. For those traveling from Siem Reap, daily buses are available, costing $10, with a transfer required midway.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit Kratie is during the dry season, from November to April. This period offers pleasant weather with minimal rainfall, perfect for outdoor activities. It’s also the best time to spot the rare Irrawaddy dolphins in the Mekong River.

Bicycles are available for rent, typically costing $1 per day, and are ideal for exploring at your own pace. Motorbikes can be rented for $6 per day, though they are not necessary for travel within the town.

  • Visit the basket weaver villages 15 km south of Kratie, with the largest being the Cham village Chheu Teil Ploch, home to 4,000 villagers.
