Hunte’s Gardens

In the hills of Coffee Gully, Barbados, lies a botanical sanctuary known as Hunte’s Gardens. Created by the passionate horticulturist Anthony Hunte, this garden offers a serene escape into a world of tropical palms, cascading ferns, and vibrant flowers. As you wander through, you’ll encounter intriguing sculptures and tranquil water features that invite you to pause and appreciate the magic of nature.

Experiencing Hunte’s Gardens

Visiting Hunte’s Gardens is a sensory delight. With over 70 species of flora beautifully arranged, the garden is a feast for the eyes. I was particularly thrilled when a hummingbird darted close, a testament to the garden’s vibrant ecosystem. The garden also features a stable and tortoises, adding to its charm. Despite its popularity, the café offers reasonably priced drinks and snacks, which was a pleasant surprise. Meeting Anthony Hunte himself, who often mingles with visitors, added a personal touch to the experience.

The Unique Charm of Hunte’s Gardens

What sets Hunte’s Gardens apart is its unique layout, a result of Anthony Hunte’s singular vision. Unlike many gardens developed by teams, this one was curated by Hunte alone, giving it a personal and artistic touch. As you explore, you’ll find stone pathways lined with tropical plants, hidden benches, and cascading waterfalls. The garden’s attention to detail creates an immersive experience that captivates visitors.

Best Time to Visit

Barbados enjoys warm weather year-round, but the gardens are most vibrant during the dry season from December to May. During this time, the flowers are in full bloom, offering a stunning display of colors. For a quieter experience, consider visiting during the off-peak months of June to November.

Getting There

Hunte’s Gardens is located in the parish of St. Joseph, a short drive from Bridgetown. From the south coast, take the ABC Highway and follow signs to St. Joseph. From the west coast, Highway 2A offers a scenic route through the countryside. If you prefer not to drive, organized tours and taxis are available to take you directly to the gardens.

Exploring the Gardens

The garden is compact and easy to navigate on foot. However, for those who prefer a more leisurely pace or have limited mobility, golf carts are available for rent. These allow you to explore comfortably while enjoying the garden’s beauty and tranquility.

Visitor Insights

While the garden’s charm is undeniable, some visitors have noted that the staff at the welcome desk and café could be more personable. This is a minor point, but it’s worth mentioning for those who value warm interactions. Despite this, the overall experience remains delightful, with the garden’s beauty and Anthony Hunte’s presence leaving a lasting impression.
