Exploring Askania-Nova Biosphere Reserve
Askania-Nova Biosphere Reserve in Ukraine offers a unique opportunity to experience untouched nature and diverse wildlife. Established in 1898 by Friedrich-Jacob Eduardovych Falz-Fein, this reserve has a rich history and remains a significant site for conservation and scientific research.
Wildlife and Flora
The reserve is renowned for its diverse wildlife. It is home to European bison and Przewalski’s horses, both of which have been reintroduced to their natural habitats here. The reserve also hosts a variety of other species, including the common eland and Indian gaur. Birdwatchers will find over 300 bird species, including the rare Sociable Lapwing.
Askania-Nova’s botanical garden features over 2,000 plant species, with many brought from around the world between 1885 and 1902. The garden includes 16 species listed in the Red Data Book of Ukraine, preserved in their natural form.
Best Time to Visit
Visit during spring or autumn for the most pleasant experience. Spring brings vibrant wildflowers and migratory birds, while autumn offers stunning foliage and active wildlife. Summer can be excessively hot, causing animals to seek shelter.
Getting There and Around
Kherson is the nearest major city, accessible by train and bus from Kyiv and Odessa. From Kherson, a taxi or local bus can take you to the reserve, approximately an hour away. Although there is no direct railway station, the journey offers scenic views.
Within the reserve, guided tours are recommended for a comprehensive experience. Alternatively, rent a bicycle to explore at your own pace. The reserve spans over 825 square kilometers, so plan your visit accordingly.
Key Attractions
The reserve includes an acclimatization zoo, an arboretum, and a virgin steppe sanctuary, the last of its kind in Europe. The Bison Breeding Center and Przewalski’s Horse Breeding Center are notable for their conservation efforts. The Great Chapli Depression, a registered Ramsar wetland, is another highlight.

Askania-Nova offers a rare glimpse into a pristine natural environment, though recent challenges have impacted the reserve. Russian occupation in 2022 led to significant damage, including fires and wildlife loss. Despite these setbacks, the reserve’s Ukrainian administration continues conservation efforts.
