WHY GO?

Golden forests, misty valleys, and the peaceful rhythm of mountain life – autumn in the Karkonosze Mountains has a charm that is hard to match. On a multi-day hike across this UNESCO biosphere reserve, you will walk through colourful beech and birch woods, follow scenic ridgelines and discover the contrasting beauty of rugged granite peaks and soft rolling valleys.

Panoramic views from the mountain ridge, open up towards both Poland and the Czech Republic, while charming mountain huts provide a warm and cozy retreat after a day on the trail. Along the way, you pass waterfalls, glacial cirques, wooden chapels and old border paths steeped in history.

In October, the mountains are bathed in shades of gold and crimson. A crisp air, the scent of pine forests and the quiet crunch of leaves underfoot create the perfect atmosphere for hiking. With fewer crowds than in summer, the trails feel more tranquil -giving you time to slow down, enjoy the scenery and watch inquisitive deer or mountain birds along the way.

Whether it’s the glowing autumn foliage, the peaceful mountain huts, or the sweeping views across Central Europe, hiking in the Karkonosze in fall promises unforgettable days in nature’s golden season.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS?

  • Explore Bolczów Castle, a 14th-century mountain stronghold hidden in the forests of the Rudawy Janowickie. Built from the surrounding granite rocks, the castle blends naturally into the landscape. Today only picturesque ruins remain, offering a glimpse into medieval history and beautiful panoramic views over the valley.
  • Explore Starościńskie Skały (“Elder’s Rocks”) – A fascinating “rock city” of towering granite formations in the Rudawy Janowickie Mountains. Its narrow passages, cliffs, and unusual shapes create a natural labyrinth, perfect for hiking and exploring.
  • Explore Miedzianka & Miedzianka Brewery, a small town with a fascinating history, almost completely abandoned after the 1950s. Today, the Miedzianka Brewery offers visitors a chance to taste local beers and learn about the town’s unique story while enjoying the surrounding mountain scenery.
  • Explore Śnieżne Kotły (“Snowy Pits”) glacial cirques in the Karkonosze Mountains, featuring steep rock walls and a small lake at the bottom. Known for their stunning natural beauty, they are a highlight for hikers and nature lovers, especially in autumn when the surrounding forests glow in gold and red.
  • Explore Wang Church, a unique medieval wooden stave church originally from Norway, relocated to Karpacz in the 19th century. Surrounded by the Karkonosze Mountains, it is famous for its distinctive architecture and serene mountain setting.
  • Explore Śnieżka Plateau, a high mountain plateau at the foot of Śnieżka, the highest peak of the Karkonosze. Known for its open landscapes, panoramic views and alpine-like vegetation, it is a popular spot for hikers and nature lovers.
