The Summit of Dreams: A Two-Day Hike to Germany's Zugspitze

Dates and meeting point

• Start: Saturday, August 29, 2026. Meet at the accommodation in Garmisch-Partenkirchen any time after 19:00.
• Finish: Monday, August 31, around 16:00 at Garmisch-Partenkirchen Central Station. Hourly trains reach Munich Central Station in about 90 minutes, for an expected arrival around 18:00.
• The exact accommodation is shared with confirmed participants closer to departure.

Detailed program

Day 0 - meet and greet

Meet at the accommodation during the evening, have dinner at your own expense and prepare equipment for the hike.

Day 1 - approximately 20 km

After breakfast, begin the journey towards the hut. The route crosses Partnach Gorge and the secluded Reintal Valley, passes the Reintalanger Hut and reaches the Knorr Hut in the evening. The day gains around 1,400 metres. Food can be purchased at the mountain restaurant, so carrying a full dinner is not necessary.

Day 2 - under 10 km

After an early breakfast at the hut, climb another approximately 870 metres to the Zugspitze summit, expected around midday. After time at the summit, descend by cable car and train. The hiking program ends around 15:00, followed by the connection to Garmisch-Partenkirchen station.

Difficulty

This is a hard hike. Although the planned route is among the most accessible climbing routes to the summit and does not require specialist climbing equipment, participants need solid hiking experience, sure-footedness and good fitness. A short suitability conversation may be arranged before departure.
