Con Dao Islands

Con Dao Islands: A Unique Destination in Vietnam

Location and History

The Con Dao Islands are a group of 16 islands situated in the South China Sea, approximately 230 kilometers southeast of Ho Chi Minh City. Historically, these islands served as a prison complex during the French colonial era, known as Poulo Condore, and later under the Saigon regime. The infamous “tiger cages” are part of this dark past. Today, the old prison buildings and a small museum are open to the public, offering a glimpse into the islands’ tumultuous history.

Getting There

Travelers have two main options for reaching the Con Dao Islands:

  1. By Air: Vietnam Airlines operates several daily flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Con Dao Airport. The ATR72-500 turboprop services are the norm, so overhead bin space is limited. Depending on your ticket, you may have a baggage allowance of 10–20 kg.
  2. By Sea: Ferries such as the Superdong Fast Ferry and Phu Quoc Express operate from Trần Đề port. Be aware that some ferry services from Vung Tau and Can Tho have been suspended, so check current schedules before planning your trip.

Local Transportation

Once on the islands, you have several transportation options:

  • Motorbike Rental: Renting a motorbike is popular and provides flexibility. Rentals are available at hotels and local shops. Note that there is only one petrol station on the island, open for limited hours.
  • Taxi: Taxis are available but tend to be more expensive than on the mainland.
  • Bicycle: For an eco-friendly option, consider renting a bicycle to explore the islands.
  • On Foot: Con Son Village is small and walkable, though the intense sun makes early morning or evening walks more comfortable.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit the Con Dao Islands is during the dry season, from December to April. Expect sunny and pleasant weather, perfect for outdoor activities like swimming, snorkeling, and hiking. However, this period can also be busy with tourists, so plan accordingly.

Things to Do

Explore the Beaches

The islands boast stunning beaches such as Dam Trau Beach and Bai Nhat Beach. These spots are perfect for sunbathing, swimming, or a leisurely walk along the shore.

Visit Con Dao National Park

Con Dao National Park covers 80% of the archipelago and is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. The park is home to unique species like the black squirrel and crab-eating macaque. However, be aware of ongoing environmental concerns and ask locals for the latest information before using park services.

Discover Historic Sites

Visit the Con Dao Prison and the Hang Duong Cemetery to understand the islands’ historical significance. These sites offer a sobering look at the past struggles for independence.

Snorkeling and Diving

The surrounding waters are a marine protected area, featuring pristine reefs and diverse marine life. Snorkeling and diving here offer a chance to see vibrant coral and tropical fish.

Accommodation

Con Dao offers various accommodation options:

  • Luxury Resorts: High-end resorts provide top-notch amenities and ocean views.
  • Mid-Range Hotels: Comfortable and affordable, these hotels offer cozy rooms and friendly service.
  • Homestays: For a more immersive experience, stay with local families and learn about their way of life.
