Istaravshan, formerly known as Uroteppa, is one of Central Asia’s oldest cities, dating back to the 6th century BCE. This city-museum was a significant center of trade and crafts along the Silk Road. The Mug-Teppa settlement is a notable archaeological site from the Achaemenid period, featuring a defensive wall and a horseshoe-shaped citadel. Istaravshan does not have an airport. The most common way to reach the city is by road. It is located on the main road connecting Tajikistan’s largest cities, Khujand and Dushanbe. The city is approximately 268 km from Dushanbe and 78 km southwest of Khujand. You can travel by shared taxi or bus from these cities.
