Piscine Naturelle

About Piscine Naturelle

La Piscine Naturelle, or The Natural Pool, is a captivating site on the Isle of Pines in New Caledonia. Located in Oro Bay on the northeastern coast, this natural swimming pool is a small underwater paradise. Protected by a rock barrier, it offers a serene environment for swimming among a myriad of tropical fish. The pool is carved into the coral and surrounded by white sand and majestic pine trees, creating a picturesque setting.

Unique Features of Piscine Naturelle

What makes Piscine Naturelle stand out is its natural formation and vibrant marine life. The pool is a result of geological processes, with a natural barrier reef providing a calm swimming area. Snorkelers and swimmers can enjoy the colorful coral reefs and diverse fish species. The area is a natural aquarium, offering an immersive experience for those interested in marine life.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit Piscine Naturelle is during the dry season, from May to October. During these months, the weather is warm, and water visibility is excellent. To avoid crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of May-June and September-October. This timing allows for a more peaceful experience while still enjoying favorable weather conditions.

How to Get to Piscine Naturelle

Reaching Piscine Naturelle involves a bit of planning. From Noumea, the capital city of New Caledonia, take a short domestic flight to the Isle of Pines. The flight takes about 20 minutes. Once on the island, you have several options:

  • By Road: Drive or take a shuttle to the small parking area at the end of the road to Oro Bay. Pay the entrance fee of CFP200 per person at the hut. From there, it’s a 10-minute walk down a paved road to the channel. Cross the channel (dry at low tide, knee-deep at high tide) and follow the forest path for 20 minutes to reach the pool.
  • Through Le Meridien: If staying at Le Meridien hotel, walk along Oro Bay’s beach to its northern tip. Then, follow the “Sandy River” channel to the pool. This route takes about 35 minutes and is best attempted at low tide.
  • Boat Tour: Join a tour combining Upi Bay and Oro Bay. After crossing Upi Bay in a traditional Melanesian outrigger, you’ll be dropped off at a trail leading to the pool in about 40 minutes. Tours can be booked through island accommodations and cost around CFP4000 Francs per person, including transport and entrance fees.

Local Transportation

Once at Piscine Naturelle, walking is the best way to explore the immediate area. The surroundings are compact, and walking lets you fully appreciate the natural beauty. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a water bottle. If you plan to visit other attractions on the Isle of Pines, like Kuto Beach or La Roche Percée, renting a car is convenient. Car rentals are available on the island, offering flexibility to explore at your own pace.
