Galina Falcon Center

Exploring the Galina Falcon Center in Liechtenstein

During my recent trip to Liechtenstein, I had the opportunity to visit the Galina Falcon Center in Malbun. This experience was a fascinating dive into the world of falconry, an ancient practice that has been preserved and celebrated here. The center offers a unique chance to get up close with birds of prey, and it’s an experience I won’t soon forget.

Falconry Show and Demonstrations

The falconry show at the Galina Falcon Center is a must-see for anyone visiting Malbun. The show lasts about an hour and is conducted in German, which is fitting given the location. Even if your German is limited, the visual spectacle of the birds in flight is universally captivating. The entry fee is CHF 8.00 for adults and CHF 4.00 for children, which I found to be quite reasonable for the experience offered.

Norman Vögeli, the falconer, shares his passion for these magnificent creatures with visitors, providing insights into the history and techniques of falconry. While my young godchildren found the show a bit long, I was thoroughly engaged by the birds’ impressive aerial displays.

Golden Eagle Hike

For those seeking a more immersive experience, the Golden Eagle hike is a fantastic option. This guided walk allows you to accompany a falconer and a majestic eagle through the stunning alpine landscape. The eagle alternates between perching on the falconer’s arm and soaring above us, offering a rare chance to observe these birds in their natural element. It’s an unforgettable experience, though perhaps not suited for those with a fear of birds.

Practical Information

Visiting in October, I found the weather to be cool and windy, so dressing in layers is advisable. The center is accessible by car, with Malbun being a short 20-30 minute drive from Vaduz. While there isn’t a dedicated wheelchair ramp, the ground-level setup makes it feasible for those with mobility challenges to enjoy the show with some assistance.

If you’re planning a longer stay, consider the Adventure Card, which for CHF 18 grants access to multiple attractions, including the falcon show, Vaduz museums, and a ride on the Malbun cable lift. This can be a cost-effective way to explore the area.

Getting There

The closest major airport is Zurich Airport in Switzerland. From there, you can take a train to Buchs, followed by a bus or taxi to Malbun. The journey offers scenic views of the Swiss and Liechtenstein countryside and takes about an hour.

Final Thoughts

The Galina Falcon Center offers a unique glimpse into the world of falconry, set against the backdrop of Liechtenstein’s beautiful alpine scenery. Whether you’re a wildlife enthusiast or simply curious about this ancient art, the center provides an engaging and educational experience. Just be prepared for the language barrier if you don’t speak German, and plan your visit during the warmer months for the best experience.
