Exploring the Oki Islands

Imagine stepping into a world where history and nature intertwine seamlessly. The Oki Islands, located in the Sea of Japan, offer just that. This archipelago, part of the UNESCO Global Geopark, is composed of around 180 islands, with only four inhabited: Dōgo, Nakanoshima, Nishinoshima, and Chiburijima. The largest town, Okinoshima, is on Dōgo and is home to nearly 15,000 of the islands’ 20,000 residents. These islands have a rich history, once serving as places of exile for emperors like Go-Toba and Go-Daigo.

Natural Wonders

The Oki Islands boast rugged coastlines, clear waters, and lush greenery. For beach enthusiasts, the islands offer serene spots like Ama Beach. For hikers, Mount Daimanji provides trails with panoramic views and diverse flora and fauna. Don’t miss Dangyo Falls on Dōgo, one of Japan’s top 100 waterfalls, cascading 40 feet near Dangyo Shrine.

Cultural Insights

The islands’ history is palpable, with ancient shrines and temples scattered across the landscape. The local folklore, steeped in Japanese mythology, adds a layer of mystique. The islands’ past as places of exile for emperors adds depth to their cultural narrative. Exploring the villages reveals a blend of historical and spiritual heritage.

Culinary Delights

Seafood is a highlight of the Oki Islands’ cuisine. Fresh catches like grilled squid, sashimi, and oysters are staples. Pair these with locally brewed sake for an authentic taste of the islands. Dining here is a straightforward affair, with local eateries offering fresh, uncomplicated dishes.
