History and Significance
The Château de la Mothe-Chandeniers, originally known as Motte Bauçay, dates back to the 13th century. It served as a stronghold for the Bauçay family, lords of Loudun. Over the centuries, it endured numerous sieges, including several captures by the English during the Hundred Years’ War. The château also suffered damage during the French Revolution, reflecting its tumultuous past.
In 1809, François Hennecart, a wealthy businessman, purchased the château. Later, in 1857, it was sold to Baron Joseph Lejeune. A significant event in its history occurred in 1932 when a fire devastated most of the buildings, leading to its abandonment. However, in December 2017, a crowdfunding campaign successfully raised €1.6 million, allowing 27,190 people to collectively purchase the château with the aim of preserving it.
