Gouffre de Padirac

Discovering Gouffre de Padirac

Gouffre de Padirac is a remarkable natural site in the Dordogne Valley of France. Known for its vast chasm and intricate cave system, it offers a journey into an underground world shaped by millennia of water erosion. This site, one of Europe’s largest chasms, was discovered by the renowned French cave explorer Edouard Martel and opened to the public in 1899. Since then, over 24 million visitors have explored its depths.

Exploring the Caves

Begin your adventure by descending into the 75-meter-deep chasm via a lift or an impressive metal staircase inspired by the Eiffel Tower. As you reach the bottom, the small circle of sky above feels distant, emphasizing the depth of your descent. The cave system is a marvel of nature, featuring enormous stalactites and stalagmites formed over thousands of years. These formations are the result of rainwater depositing calcite, gradually shaping the limestone into stunning structures.

The highlight of the visit is a boat ride on the subterranean river. Guides use wooden poles to navigate the flat-bottomed boats through the pristine turquoise waters. The caves, illuminated to showcase their features, reveal a world of underground pools and vast caverns, 103 meters below the surface.

Visiting Tips

  • Wear comfortable shoes for walking on uneven surfaces.
  • The cave temperature is consistently between 13-14 degrees Celsius (55-57 degrees Fahrenheit), so bring a warm jacket.
  • Cameras are allowed, but be mindful of the lighting conditions for photography.

Gouffre de Padirac is open from the Easter holidays until early November. Visiting during the summer months (June to September) offers pleasant weather, but expect larger crowds.
