Matanzas is a city rich in history and culture, often referred to as the “Athens of Cuba” due to its 19th-century sugar boom. Start your visit at Parque de la Libertad, a central hub perfect for people-watching. Nearby, the Teatro Sauto, a neoclassical theater, stands as a testament to the city’s cultural heritage.
Nature lovers should not miss the Yumuri Valley, known for its lush landscapes and opportunities for bird watching. The valley offers trails for hiking and stunning viewpoints. For a different perspective, take a fluvial tour on the Canímar River, which is navigable for smaller boats and offers beautiful views along its 13-kilometer stretch.
Hidden Gems
Just outside the city, the Cuevas de Bellamar offers a fascinating underground experience with its impressive stalactites and stalagmites. Public buses from Parque de la Libertad can take you there for around $5.
The Bacunayagua Bridge, one of Cuba’s highest, provides panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. It’s a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts.
