About Tyresta National Park
Tyresta National Park is located about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from central Stockholm, Sweden. It covers an area of 19.7 square kilometers (7.6 square miles) and is part of a larger protected region that includes the surrounding nature reserve, totaling approximately 47 square kilometers (18 square miles). This area is known for its rift valley landscape, which is typical of central Sweden but rare on a global scale. The park is home to one of the largest sections of untouched forest in southern Sweden, making it a significant site for both conservation and recreation.
Exploring the Wilderness
The park’s landscape is dominated by old-growth coniferous forests, with some pine trees reaching up to 400 years old. It also features deciduous broadleaf forests, open arable land, and historical buildings. The diversity of plant and animal life is remarkable, with up to 8,000 species of animals, many of which rely on the primeval forest habitat.
Hiking Trails
Tyresta National Park offers over 60 kilometers of well-marked hiking trails. Options range from the easy 2-kilometer Nature Trail to the more challenging 10-kilometer Stensjöleden Trail. These trails allow visitors to explore the park’s natural beauty at their own pace, with opportunities to see lakes such as Årsjön and Trehörningen along the way.
Camping and Overnight Stays
Camping is permitted in designated areas within the park. Visitors must obtain the necessary permits and adhere to park guidelines to ensure a responsible camping experience. Spending a night under the stars allows for a deeper connection with the park’s serene environment.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Tyresta National Park depends on your interests. Summer months (June to August) offer mild temperatures and extended daylight, ideal for hiking and camping. Autumn (September to October) brings vibrant foliage, perfect for photography. Winter (December to February) transforms the park into a snowy landscape, suitable for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Note that about 10% of the park was affected by a fire in August 1999, which has since become an area of ecological interest.

Tyresta National Park is accessible from Stockholm and other parts of Sweden.
From Stockholm
Travelers can take a direct bus from Slussen to Tyresta By, the park’s entrance. The journey takes about 30 minutes, with regular service throughout the day. From Tyresta By, visitors can start their exploration on foot.
From Other Parts of Sweden
For those driving, the park is conveniently located off the E4 highway. Follow signs to Tyresta By, where parking is available. From there, the park’s trails are easily accessible.
Local Transportation
Within Tyresta National Park, walking or hiking is the primary mode of transportation. The trails are well-maintained, but visitors should wear comfortable footwear and bring essentials like water, snacks, and a map.
