Joya Grande Zoo and Eco Park

Visiting Joya Grande Zoo and Eco Park was a delightful experience for my family and me. Located about an hour and a half drive from San Pedro Sula, the journey to the zoo is quite straightforward, though the last 9 kilometers are on a dirt road. Fortunately, the road is well-maintained, making the drive manageable.

Wildlife Encounters

The zoo is home to an impressive array of animals, particularly large cats. We learned that many of the tigers and jaguars were actually born at the zoo, which speaks to their successful breeding programs. As you explore, you’ll notice that part of the zoo is uphill, so wearing comfortable shoes is advisable.

Activities and Amenities

Joya Grande offers more than just animal viewing. There are several activities available for an additional fee, such as horseback riding, hiking to nearby caves, a train ride, and a canopy tour. The caves are about a 30-minute walk each way, providing a nice excursion for those interested in a bit of adventure. Additionally, the park features large swimming pools where we spent several enjoyable hours.

For those looking to extend their visit, the zoo offers cabins for overnight stays. However, it’s worth noting that during our visit, only one restaurant was open, and the food was overpriced and not particularly impressive. It also took over 40 minutes for our order to be ready, so plan accordingly if you decide to dine there.

Practical Information

The entrance fee is 250 lempiras for adults and 150 for children, and the park operates from approximately 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. While the animals appeared to be in good condition, some of the enclosures were on the smaller side, which might be a point of concern for some visitors.

Overall, Joya Grande Zoo and Eco Park is a fantastic place to spend a day, especially for families with children. My kids had a wonderful time, and the animals seemed well cared for. The highlight for us was seeing the tigers and lions, which were healthy and well-fed. Next time, I plan to stay in one of the cabins to fully enjoy all the park has to offer.
