Discovering Tara National Park
Our visit to Tara National Park in Western Serbia was an unexpected delight. Initially, it wasn’t on our itinerary, but a road closure led us to this stunning natural area. The park is located near the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina and offers a diverse landscape of dense forests, rolling hills, and crystal-clear rivers.
Getting There
Reaching Tara National Park is straightforward. The nearest international gateway is Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport. From Belgrade, you can either rent a car or take a bus, with the drive taking approximately four hours. The journey is scenic, offering a preview of the natural beauty that awaits.
Best Time to Visit
The park is accessible year-round, but your experience will vary with the seasons. Spring and autumn are particularly beautiful, with vibrant foliage and mild weather. Summer is ideal for hiking and water activities, while winter transforms the park into a snowy retreat perfect for skiing and snowboarding.
Exploring the Park
Hiking Trails
Tara National Park features a variety of hiking trails suitable for all levels. The Banjska Stena trail is a favorite, leading to a breathtaking viewpoint over the Drina River. The hike is manageable and rewards you with stunning vistas, so don’t forget your camera.
Wildlife and Nature
The park is home to diverse wildlife, including deer, foxes, and numerous bird species. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars to spot the elusive golden eagle. The park’s rich biodiversity is a testament to its well-preserved natural environment.
Activities
For a bit of adventure, consider renting quads to explore the park’s canyons and viewpoints. We rented two quads for 50 EUR each for 1.5 hours, which was a thrilling way to experience the landscape. However, plan your route carefully, as navigation can be tricky without prior research.
Accommodation
Accommodation options range from cozy guesthouses to luxury resorts. For a unique stay, try one of the traditional wooden cabins that blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings. Waking up to the sounds of nature is an experience in itself.
Local Cuisine
Don’t miss the chance to savor local Serbian cuisine. We enjoyed a delightful breakfast at Drinska Pica Restaurant just outside the park. Try the cevapi, a grilled meat dish, and pair it with rakija, a traditional fruit brandy, for an authentic taste of the region.
Practical Tips
- Plan your visit to avoid foggy days, which can obscure the stunning views.
