Putre

Discovering Putre, Chile

Getting There

Reaching Putre is an adventure. Fly into Arica, the closest city with an international airport. From there, you can rent a car or take a local bus. The drive is about 140 km on National Highway 11 and typically takes around 2.5 hours, though roadwork can add an hour or more. Buses like “La Paloma” leave Arica daily at 06:50, except on December 25 and January 1. Alternatively, international buses from Arica to La Paz, Bolivia, stop at “Alto Putre,” about 5 km from the village. A taxi from Arica costs around 70,000 pesos. Note: There are no gas stations along the route, so plan accordingly.

When to Visit

Putre’s high plateau climate means rain is more frequent from December to March. Summer temperatures rarely exceed 20°C (68°F). Winter is mild, with minimal frost. For fewer crowds, consider visiting during spring (September to November) or autumn (March to May).
