Rasnov Fortress: A Journey Through Time
History and Significance
Rasnov Fortress, or Cetatea Rasnov, stands as a testament to Romania’s layered history. Built between 1211 and 1225 during the rule of the Teutonic Knights in the Kingdom of Hungary, the fortress occupies a strategic position on a rocky hilltop. This location provided a defensive advantage, crucial during the Tatar incursion of 1335, when Rasnov and Brașovia were among the few places left unconquered.
The fortress has witnessed numerous historical events, including a siege by the Ottoman army in 1421 and a retreat by Michael the Brave in 1600. In 1612, it was conquered for the only time due to a water shortage. To address this vulnerability, a well was dug between 1623 and 1642. Despite suffering damage from a fire in 1718 and an earthquake in 1802, the fortress remained a refuge until 1849. By 1850, its defensive role diminished, and it was largely abandoned.
The Legend of the Well
The fortress’s well, dug to ensure water supply during sieges, is steeped in legend. It is said that two Turkish prisoners were tasked with digging the well in exchange for their freedom, inscribing verses from the Koran on its walls. The well, abandoned in 1850 due to a broken windlass, is rumored to hide a treasure, though recent explorations have found none.
Architecture
The fortress’s architecture is simple yet functional, using stone and bricks for walls and wood for gates. The walls, up to 16 feet high, are topped with roof tiles to prevent fires. The fortress comprises two courts: an exterior court with a square tower and an interior court with better protection. Sharp cliffs surround the fortress, enhancing its defense, while the eastern side features heavier fortifications due to its vulnerability.
