Exploring Pujon Highlands: A Journey Through North Korea’s Scenic Marvel

Located in South Hamgyong Province, this remote area offers a unique glimpse into the country’s landscapes. The journey to Pujon is challenging but rewarding, providing a rare opportunity to experience one of the ‘Eight Great Sights of Korea.’

The Journey to Pujon Stone River

Reaching Pujon Stone River is an experience in itself. The trip begins in Hamhung, and the drive takes about 2-3 hours each way. The winding mountain roads offer numerous scenic viewpoints, perfect for photography enthusiasts. While the journey is long, the views of the lush mountains and valleys make it worthwhile.

Discovering Pujon Stone River

Upon arrival, the Pujon Stone River presents a fascinating natural phenomenon. This ‘river’ is a vast field of large rocks, some up to 4 meters across, stretching over 700 meters down the slope of Mt. Okryon. The river beneath the rocks adds an eerie quality, as the sound of flowing water contrasts with the static stones above. Visitors can explore the area by descending from a wooden bridge, but caution is advised due to the large gaps between rocks.

Historical Insights and Revolutionary Sites

For those interested in history, Pujon Highlands offers more than just natural beauty. The area is dotted with Slogan Trees, remnants of the anti-Japanese resistance period from the 1920s to the 1940s. These trees serve as a reminder of the region’s revolutionary past.

Views from Mt. Okryong

After exploring the Stone River, a visit to the peak of Mt. Okryong is a must. The summit provides breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys and mountains. You can reach the top by either a long hike or a short drive. At the peak, you’ll find a stone cabin, part of the Okryong Revolutionary Site, where local guides share stories of the area’s historical significance.

Practical Tips for Visiting Pujon Highlands

Since there are no accommodations in Pujon, plan for a day trip from Hamhung. After a day of exploration, relax at the Majon Beach Resort or the Sinhungsan Hotel. Keep in mind that local transportation is limited, so hiring a guide or joining a tour is recommended for a smooth experience.

While the trip requires effort, the combination of stunning scenery and cultural insights makes it an unforgettable experience.
